Storyboard
A storyboard is a sequence of drawings that helps you create movies.
It helps to visually represent what the director’s vision is, how to shoot a film. A picture speaks more than a thousand words, and it is very useful as a basis for communication and an opportunity to convey the director’s ideas to the crew and producers. Some directors create a storyboard for each scene and camera angle to save time and money during the actual filming. Others believe that this can interfere with the creative process and they will have only a few illustrations for the scenes before filming.
Introduction
Any comic book can be purchased to get an idea of how to draw storyboards. In many large studios, the storyboard will resemble something akin to this. If you’re pretty good at drawing yourself, storyboarding may seem like a tedious task to you, but at the same time it will be quite useful for you when storyboarding a few of the most difficult episodes. Every time you draw a storyboard, you are immersed in the process and imagine every frame captured on camera. It’s still less expensive than having a studio with an entire crew waiting for you to finally see and reveal your vision right there on the set.
To clarify some concepts, it is worth consulting with the operator. The storyboard is mainly used to get a first impression of what the movie will look like. Here you can define the length of the scene, the angle and the sequence of scenes to be shot. The storyboard is rarely exactly like the original, but it is useful as a baseline during the filming itself. It is often seen that as the film crew is disassembling the lighting fixtures and preparing for the next episode, the director and the cinematographer discuss the storyboard and try to find the best fit before the scene is ready. Since they already have an outline of the plan, there is more room for improvisation.
The main areas where storyboarding is considered an integral and important part of planning are scenes with complex tricks, special effects, and costume design and make-up.
